Make your own history at the BMI Ballarat
2016 has been a big year for the independently run Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute (BMI), and a new film ‘Make Your Own History’, produced by Ballarat filmmaker Erin McCuskey of Yum Studio, invites the Ballarat community to get involved with what has been described as Ballarat’s oldest and newest treasure.
BMI President Phil Roberts commissioned Erin McCuskey to update an earlier film produced by Yum Studio ‘Make One Music’, which captures the transformation of the institute over a decade of amazing restoration works. This is now complimented by ‘Make Your Own History’, that sees the BMI moving into a new phase, drawing together the rich history and contemporary cultural life of the city.
Now viewable on the BMI website, the film features the beautiful spaces of the BMI, an interview with new curator Amy Tsilemanis, and an invitation to add your own touch to this historic place as it moves into an exciting future.
Ms McCuskey says it has been a joy and revelation to use visual storytelling to shine a light on the BMI and describes the place as a “rare hub of culture, story, ideas and learning that has always been core to the heritage of Ballarat. It’s important to reach out so that people will engage in the spaces and realise its potential.”
